I still remember the establishment of the Department and the day we started classes. It is a long journey in retrospect. I am very happy to see the Department flourishing with the young team
mamaging the departmental activities. It was my dream to launch the first ever campus radio station of Balochistan, towards that we worked day and night and finally the Department owns the FM Radio Station as envisaged, broadcasting programs on daily basis.
The Department is going in the right direction competing with other Universities of the country. There is a huge potential in the Department and its team to introduce new programs. The students are also very keen in learning the modren tools used in the field of Media.

Media Studies

The programs offered in Media Studies provides a thorough grounding in the theories, approaches and research necessary for the study of media and communication processes in both the national and global contexts. The course combines an overview of the history and development of communication research with a critical analysis of current theories in the field.
Students will analyse key areas in media and journalism including media production, organisation and control, news in the local, national and global context, media/new media roles and the political process, communication policy and regulation, and cross-national media and communication systems.
The courses will enable students to engage critically with contemporary debates surrounding the social, political and cultural roles of media in modern societies. They will investigate the quantitative and qualitative methods and approaches necessary for analysing all aspects of the communication process, from media organisations, media professionals and production to media content, audiences and cultural consumption.
The degree students receive will equip them with the advanced analytical skills and knowledge they need to progress their professional career or to pursue further academic study in the rapidly expanding field of media and communication research

The Poineers of Journalism Studies
in Balochistan

Department of Media Studies (previously known as Mass Communication) was established In January 1987, with a view to enhance and diversify the teaching capacity of University of Balochistan. Regular teaching started in March 1987 with a small faculty consisting of only three lecturers. After four months in April 1987, Ms Seemi Naghmana Tahir was promoted as Assistant Professor and she formally took the charge of the Department as Chairperson.
In the beginning due to various constraints, more emphasis was laid on theoretical perspective of Media Studies and only four out of 12 courses had a practical component. With the passage of time and enhanced faculty, new disciplines were introduced and more efforts were put in to bridge the gap between theory and practice of media. Now the Department of Media and Journalism, University of Balochistan is at par with most of the universities of the country with enhanced faculty.
Hundreds of students graduated from this Department since 1989 are performing in different media organizations i.e. Radio, Television, Newspapers, Directorate of Public Relations, and Public Relations Wings of various provincial and federal government departments, and even some of the students own their newspapers.

Exta curricular activities

The Department of Media Studies strongly believes in providing opportunity to students to engage in various healthy activities apart from class room based learning. The students get to gather on various occassions be it celebrating world journalism day, participating in sports events like cricket, football or contesting filmaking or debate competitions.
